Posters: The Record Breakers!

We're back with another edition of our popular series of 'Record Breakers' blog articles! This time, we're going to look at some of the many times that posters have appeared in the record books.

Posters have been around for hundreds of years and are used for many different purposes, from showcasing upcoming events and advertising products to expressing political viewpoints and simply as an expressive medium for art. It was in the middle part of the 19th century that posters became really popular thanks to the perfection of the colour lithography process, making mass production a real possibility.

World's Largest Advertising Poster
In terms of area, the largest advertising poster in the world measured a mammoth 28,922 square metres and was created by Arby's, a popular fast-food restaurant chain in the USA. The poster was made when Arby's began serving Coca-Cola products and read simply "Arby’s Now Has Coke." Interestingly, the location chosen to display the gigantic poster was Monowi in Nebraska, the USA's smallest town!

World's Longest Commercially-Available Poster
Measuring over 12 metres in length, the longest poster available to purchase was designed and manufactured by Steve Klein. The poster depicts a high-resolution image of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, complete with the names of the 58,214 Americans who tragically lost their lives in the conflict.

World's Longest Line of Posters
This record was set at the 2019 Judo World Championship, which took place at Nihon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Volunteers from the All Japan Judo Federation arranged 2,019 posters side by side; each poster depicted a judo athlete wearing a black belt, creating a continuous, visually-striking line.

World's Most Expensive Poster
The most that has ever been paid for a poster is a massive US$690,000 (around 7,500,000 kr!). Featuring an advertisement for Metropolis, the iconic 1927 sci-fi film by Austria's Fritz Lang, the poster is one of only four in existence.

World's Largest Collection of Posters
Lupe and Norm Nielsen of the USA began collecting posters back in 1991 and today own around 2,000 of them, all of which are on display in a dedicated building. Among the posters are several highly valuable examples dating back to the 19th century.
