Print on Demand Clothing: Results of New Survey Revealed
A new study into what people think about custom apparel has been undertaken by Vistaprint. The research sought the opinions of 2,000 adults and in this edition of the Texprint blog we look at some of the key findings, which you can use to help you inform your own print on demand business...
- 39% of respondents agreed that the clothing someone chooses to wear can suggest a great deal about their personality
- 28% of those surveyed enjoyed supporting small businesses through custom merchandise
- Custom printed T-shirts are by far the most popular type of personalised clothing, with 66% of respondents owning at least one. Sweatshirts (46%) and polo shirts (44%) were also commonly chosen items
- In the personalised accessories sector, 37% of people owned a customised cap and 30% owned a customised tote bag
- More people (42%) preferred a printed logo on the front of their custom tee than on the back (34%)
- Customers were asked what sort of designs they wouldn't choose for a custom printed T-shirts. These included offensive language (50%), a selfie (43%), slogans/phrases (27%) and song lyrics (25%)
- Many different events were cited as reasons for buying personalised apparel to wear, including parties (50%), work (45%), holidays (22%) and music festivals (19%). 32% of people bought custom clothing simply as a way of representing and displaying their personality
- 35% of respondents to the Vistaprint survey said that they would be willing to spend more money on an item of personalised clothing
- In terms of age, the number of people aged 18-24 who choose customised clothing was higher than that of those aged 25-34; these figures were 76% and 68% respectively
- 20% of people said that they would be more likely to remember a company if the employees wore custom apparel displaying the company's brand
With these results in mind, here are some top tips for designing print on demand clothing:
- Don't create overly-complicated designs. Be bold but remember that less is often more.
- Do research what is trending. Incorporate these elements into your design.
- Don't use any material that is copyrighted.
- Do be original. Steer clear of stock images and create your own instead.
- Don't use language or graphics that are likely to cause offence.
- Do choose clear fonts with clean lines that can be read easily.
