Aprons: The Record Breakers!
We're back with another installment of our popular 'Record Breakers' series of blog editions! In these articles, we pick one of the products from our extensive portfolio and scour the record books to find out the biggest, best and often the weirdest examples. This time, we're going to look at aprons...
World's Largest Apron
The world's largest apron was created in India and the record remains unbroken since it was set back in June of 2011. Created by textile manufacturer Ambadi Enterprises Ltd with the purpose of promoting the company's activities overseas, the gigantic apron was stitched by 26 tailors who spent a total of 40 days on the project.
Measuring 25.3 metres in length and 21.8 metres in width (for a total of more than 550 square metres), the apron smashed the previous record set in 2007; that apron measured a mere 260 square metres. To prove their achievement, Ambadi Enterprises Ltd actually shipped the finished apron (which weighed over 92 kilograms!) to the UK headquarters of the Guinness Book of World Records.
Oldest Depiction of an Apron
Aprons have been worn for thousands of years for various purposes from simply protecting clothing to acting as ceremonial attire. Though depictions of aprons can be found spanning across all times and cultures, the oldest discovered to date is on a figurine of a Minoan fertility goddess. The priceless figurine was excavated from an archaeological site on the Greek island of Crete and has been dated to approximately 1600 BCE.
World's Largest Apron Museum
Nobody can deny how useful an apron is and many of them are very pretty but we're not sure who would want to look at 3,500 of them! That's how many there are on display at the world's largest apron museum which, located in Mississippi, is in fact the ONLY apron museum in the whole of the USA.
The museum was founded in 2006 by Carolyn Terry, who got interested in aprons while attending auctions to which she had gone to buy books. Some of the museum pieces date all the way back to the American Civil War and there are also plenty of modern ones as well. Carolyn's personal favourite apron is adorned with a napkin which bears the signature of the renowned actor Tom Cruise.
Most Pairs Tying Aprons Simultaneously
OK, now things start to get really weird. Don't say we didn't warn you! Tying an apron certainly isn't the most challenging thing to do on your own but, like so many other things, it's more fun with two. In March of 2017, an astounding 1,580 pairs of people from the US-based home improvement store chain Home Depot got together to set this unusual record. The event was part of the company's yearly Social Media Marketing awards ceremony.
