In proper terms, the season begins at the Winter Solstice, when Earth's northern hemisphere points directly away from the sun. At this time, the northern hemisphere experiences the shortest day, receiving the fewest hours of sunlight. The Winter Solstice this year falls on Saturday the 21st of December. Winter will then reign until Thursday the 20th of March next year. 

Though these days are very specific, our precious planet doesn't really care about such man-made trivialities as the calendar!
